The desire to accumulate things and store up wealth was as strong in the days of the early church as it is today. People wanted to be safe and secure and not need to scramble to find food for themselves and their family for the next meal. These simple wants gave them a “me first” attitude and caused them to be blind to the needs of others—just as they do today.

Something had happened to those early Christians, though. They acted differently than others. Instead of acquiring as many things as they could, they held all things in common. They would sell their possessions so that everyone had enough. They were generous people who earned the respect and goodwill of the people around them.

The Lord has touched our lives and we are a different people. Most of us will not feel called to the communal life of the early Christians. This does not negate the fact, though, that the Holy Spirit is at work in our lives changing us in to the image of God. It might be worthwhile for us to pause and ponder how our lives have been changed by the gospel of Jesus Christ and what the people around us see and hear.

Acts 2:43-47

Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
