Check-In Storytimes!

Jesus Triumphant Entry Into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday – Based Off Ruth 1:1-17)

Main Theme: Sometimes the right choice isn't what's easiest.

Characters:  Narrator, Ruth, Naomi, Orpah, Elimelek, Mahlon, Chilion.

Narrator:  Naomi was from Bethlehem,

Naomi:  Hi!

Narrator:  She and her husband Elimelek...Eee-lih...meh...cough, cough...that's tough.

Elimelek: [impatiently] EEE-Lih-MEH-leck!

Narrator:  [tries unsuccessfully]  ANYWAYS, they traveled to a far away land when there wasn't enough work for them in Bethlehem.  They took their sons Mahlon,

Mahlon:  Hi!

Narrator: and Chilion.

Chilion:  Hi!

Narrator: to Moab (Mow-ab) to live.  When they were there, Chilion and Mahlon married some Moabite ladies named Orpah and Ruth.

Orpah: Hi!

Ruth: Whatup!

Narrator:  We don't really hear why...but Elimelek dies.  And so do Chilion and Mahlon.  Maybe it was some sort of plague that only affects dude...I don't know.  [During this speech, Elimelek, Mahlon & Chilion look confused as they don't know what caused their death – then they each choose a dramatic way to die, dragging it out...noisy after the "I don't know”]

Anyways, there's Naomi.  She's got no husband and no son.  She's pretty bummed.

Naomi:  [wailing]

Narrator:  She hears that the Isrealites will take care of the down and out, so she decides to leave Moab for her home.  She tries to get rid of her daughter in laws.

Naomi:  Not get rid of – I'm trying to get them to do what's best.

Narrator:  Uh huh!

Naomi: [To Ruth and Orpah, tears] Girls, you gotta go back to your parents' houses.  I'm going to my own country.  I worship a different God than you do.  You would be way too sad.

Orpah & Ruth:  No, Naomi!!  We love you!

Naomi:  But I have no way to support you!

Narrator:  Oh yeah, this was a totally lame time in history where women can't work - if you don't have a man in your house you will probably starve to death. [Notices Naomi waiting impatiently] I'm sorry – continue!

Naomi:  Seriously, girls, I have nothing to give you.  Even if I had a husband and got pregnant tonight

Narrator:  Eeeww....

Naomi: Stopit!  ANYWAYS – even if I had another son right away, you can't marry him for a long time, are you really going to wait that long just to stay with me?

Orpah:  Sorry, I think I gotta go back home.  [Hugs Naomi, both crying]

Narrator:  Naomi was sad, just waiting for Ruth to bounce like Orpah...but Ruth was surprising...

Ruth: [clinging to Naomi] NAOMI I LOVE YOU!  You are my person.  I will follow you to your country.  I will become one of their people.  I will worship your God.  I won't abandon you! [touching look, hug]

Narrator:  Sweet surprise, right?  People use those words as a romantic love text for weddings all the time –but it was a mother and daughter in law – hah!

- END -

Kid Story: Think of a time you had to make a really difficult choice – perhaps between friends, or between what activities you'll do in school, maybe you'd disappoint someone no matter what you'd choose. What helped you make the choice?

Check-In Questions and Mentor Meeting Options

THIS MONTH'S MENTOR MEETING OPTIONS

Choose one of these activities for your next mentor meeting.

Activity #1: Movie

Watch the movie Brave (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1217209/). What does the movie say about the changing roles of women? What is your view on the roles of women in your community? Are they where they should be? In what ways? In what ways are they not?

Activity #2: Community Spy

Go to a local mall, movie theater, or other gathering space. Spend some time watching the people who gather. What do you observe about the people in your community? What kinds of relationships do they have? How do they treat one another?
