Fruits of the Spirit
(Galatians 5:16-26)
Readers: Narrator, Paul (speaking to himself while writing)
Narrator: Paul was a church-builder and a letter-writer. Well, he kinda HAD to be a letter writer, because later in his life he was in prison, so he couldn't get the F2F time with the people he wanted to communicate with. Anyway, he wrote a particular church in Galatia. (<< And if you click there, you can see where this was.) They were a place with lots of difficulties and problems. But their biggest one was that there was a question who was "in" and who was "out" in the church. Some said you had to follow all the Jewish customs to be a "real" follower of Jesus. Paul said no. He wanted people to know that all that mattered was the relationship that God chose to have with us through Jesus. Faith—belief in God and God's son Jesus—was enough. In the letter to the Galatians, he got around to writing about the "fruits" of the Spirit. Essentially, those were the good things that come in believing and trying our best to follow Jesus. Ah! Here's Paul right now, writing this part of the letter!
Paul: Hmmm. I wanna tell these stubborn Galatians how important it is they live by the spirit. [pause] Hmmmm. How should I do this?
Paul: Oh! I know! I'll talk about fruit!
Paul: Bananas...
Paul: Apples...
Paul: Cucumbers... No. Wait. That's a vegetable. Hmmmm. Ah! Mangoes...
Paul: Kiwi... Oh... wait. I wouldn't know about that one yet, would I? It's from New Zealand!
Paul: Oh yes. Almost forgot. Figs...
Paul: Tangerinos... Is that what they're called?
Paul: Awwww. Let's just call 'em "Fruit of the Spirit." Yeah. That's easier.
Paul: The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another.
Paul: There we go. Inspiration!!
Kid Story: Which "fruit of the Spirit" do you see yourself as possessing? What is your toughest "desire of the flesh" you struggle with?
