Psalm 131, Psalm of Trust

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

O Lord, my heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.
— Psalm 131:12

There’s a hammock at my grandparents’ cabin. It’s strung beneath a copse of cedar trees by the lake. When I am lying there, gently rocking, listening to the wind and the waves and the low tones of the wind chime, I am at peace unlike anywhere else in my life. I am not elated or occupied “with things too great and marvelous for me.” I am simply curled up in the embrace of the woven cords of the hammock, my soul calmed and quieted. I feel God’s presence there.

I can’t always be in that hammock at the lake. Life is busy and there is much to be done. God calls us to faith-filled work in the world. Yet when there is need, I can relax into God’s loving arms like a child, and trust that God will care for me in all things.

Mothering God, I trust in your loving-kindness and thank you for your calming presence in my life. Amen.
