 depression and despail

by Dr. Kimberly Leetch, Clergy Stuff

Most of us have experienced this at least once in a lifetime. It's that deep, dark night of the soul when the thought creeps in -- I wonder when my time is up? Sometimes it's just a wondering. But other times it's almost a longing. When life gets so difficult, one wonders if it might be best if the end of days came sooner than later.

When I'm feeling and thinking that, I'm comforted that the Psalmist knows exactly what I'm talking about. It means I'm not alone. It means that suffering is part of the human condition. And knowing that others experience it, too, makes it seem a little more tolerable. I start to wonder what others fight for. What do they love that makes the fight worth it? What do I love that makes my fight worth it?

Quite a lot, actually. Sometimes it's hard to recognize, but the truth is I have a lot to live for. I have a lot of love in my life. So do you. It can be hard to see sometimes. But it's there even when we can't see it. There are people who love you. There are people you love, too. There is a beautiful world with more to explore than anyone has the time to do. There are more people worth knowing. There are more experiences to have. And there's more of God to get to know.

There might be days you want to know how many days you have left. On those days, do whatever you need to do to find your hope. Focus on the love. Focus on the infinite possibilities. And know you are not alone.

Narrative Lectionary Daily Reading:

Psalm 39:4-6

“Lord, let me know my end,
   and what is the measure of my days;
   let me know how fleeting my life is.
You have made my days a few handbreadths,
   and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight.
Surely everyone stands as a mere breath.
          Selah
   Surely everyone goes about like a shadow.
Surely for nothing they are in turmoil;
   they heap up, and do not know who will gather. “
